Things One Can Try at Home to Eliminate Bad Breath

Bad breath or halitosis is a very common complaint faced by both genders across all age groups.Halitosis is multifactorial in origin, and the solution for bad breath depends on its cause.
Bad breath can be oral and non-oral in origin. Bad breath removal techniques depend on the underlying pathology or reason. There is a range of solutions you can try at home, and we have listed a few of them here.
These remedies can be classified as lifestyle changes and home remedies.

Lifestyle changes

·         Brushing regularly: This cannot be emphasized enough. Brushing removes dirt and food particles from the surface of the teeth and gums. Bacteria in the oral cavity react with the food particles to release foul-smelling compounds. Brushing teeth regularly prevents oral infection. Brushing should be done twice a day for at least two minutes.

·         Flossing: It removes dirt and food particles between the teeth. Brushing is        not effective in removing accumulated particles from between the teeth.

·         Tongue cleaning: Dorsum of the tongue is a shelter to millions of bacteria.      Cleaning the tongue with a scraper helps to remove dirt and food particles on      the  surface  of  the  tongue  and  prevents  the  growth  of  bacteria.

·         Stay hydrated: Consume enough water. This improves the production of     saliva that naturally flushes out bacteria from the oral cavity.

·         Mouth rinse: Mouth rinse helps to flush out the bacteria and accumulated     food particles in the mouth, preventing oral infection and bad mouth odor.

Home remedies

·         Tea: Compounds found in both green and black teas known as polyphenols, halt the growth of bacteria causing bad breath. Polyphenols are also seen to prevent the existing bacteria in the oral cavity from producing malodor like hydrogen sulfide. Mint has a similar action, and having a mint green tea can also help to prevent the foul smell.

·         Herbs and spices: Herbs like parsley have deodorizing properties. Research suggests that parsley can combat foul sulfur compounds. Chew fresh leaves after each meal for optimal effect. Fennel or anise seeds consists of aromatic essential oils that masks malodor in the mouth.

·         Zinc: Zinc is seen to reduce the number of sulfurous compounds in the breath. Rinsing with a solution containing zinc is seen to be effective in reducing mouth odor for at least 6 months

·         Apples: Raw apples are seen to have a powerful effect on bad breath occurring due to the consumption of garlic. Natural compounds in apples combat the foul-smelling compounds in garlic.

·         Oranges: Dryness of the mouth due to a lack of saliva is one of the causes for halitosis. Vitamin C is seen to boost the production of saliva in the mouth that flushes the bacteria out of the oral cavity. Oranges are rich in vitamin C.

·         Yogurt: Research indicates that consuming 3 ounces of sugar-free yogurt with good bacteria, twice a day for 6 weeks, reduces bad breath by lowering odor-causing sulfide compounds. Moreover, yogurt fortified with vitamin D checks the growth of bacteria in the oral cavity.

·         Milk: Research shows that drinking milk after eating garlic can prevent or improve garlic breath. Have a glass of milk after consuming pungent food items like onion and garlic to prevent mouth odor
·         Pineapple juice: Consuming pineapple juice is seen to neutralize bad mouth odor and is used since ages for the same. However, it is important that you rinse to remove sugars present in the fruit juice from your mouth.
